Medication management might help if…
- 01
Your primary care doctor started you on an antidepressant years ago, and no one has really checked in since.
- 02
You’ve tried a few medications, and each one came with side effects you couldn’t live with.
- 03
Therapy is helping, but anxiety or low mood still keeps pulling the floor out from under you.
- 04
Mood swings, racing thoughts or sleepless stretches make you wonder whether something else is going on.
- 05
You’re wondering if you still need your medication, or whether you could taper safely with support.
- 06
Your current appointments last a few minutes, and you leave with more questions than answers.
- 07
You’d like a second opinion on a diagnosis or treatment plan before making another change.
Medication management for Topeka, KS residents at Mind & Body Healing Collective is provided by our psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) through secure telehealth anywhere in Kansas, with in-person appointments available at our Lawrence and Overland Park offices. That means you can meet with a prescriber from home, from a private room at your office near the Capitol, or from your kitchen table in Silver Lake, without taking half a day off to drive to an appointment.
Our approach blends evidence-based psychiatric care with genuine interest in the whole person: sleep, nutrition, movement, relationships, trauma history, and what you want your life to feel like. Whether you’re starting medication for the first time, reevaluating a regimen that no longer fits, or hoping to reduce medications safely, your prescriber takes time to understand your story before making recommendations, and keeps adjusting as you change.
What medication management actually involves
Medication management is an ongoing, collaborative relationship with a licensed prescriber. It begins with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation covering your symptoms, mental health and medical history, previous medications, family history, substance use, sleep and daily life. From there, your prescriber walks through options with you, including the option of not starting medication, and explains expected benefits, possible side effects, and how long it may take to know whether something is working.
Follow-up visits are where the real work happens. Your prescriber tracks how you’re feeling, adjusts doses, watches for side effects, orders lab work when it’s needed, and helps you weigh any changes. The aim is the lowest effective dose that lets you feel like yourself, within a plan that evolves as your life and your healing change. You are always part of those decisions, and it’s okay to ask why a change is being suggested.
Can a psychiatric nurse practitioner prescribe my medication?
Yes. A psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse with specialized graduate training in assessing and treating mental health conditions and prescribing psychiatric medications. Many people find that PMHNP care feels more conversational, with a focus on education and partnership. At our collective, our PMHNP offers intentional, unrushed appointments where clients feel genuinely seen and heard. Your questions are welcome, and learning how each medication works is part of the care.
Our prescriber manages medications for concerns such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD and ADHD, often alongside therapy. If your needs call for a different level of care, such as inpatient treatment or specialized medical management, we’ll help you find an appropriate referral rather than stretching beyond what is safe. Your prescriber will also ask about physical health, other prescriptions and supplements to watch for interactions.
How medication management works for Topeka residents
To be clear about logistics: our psychiatric nurse practitioner sees clients by telehealth and in person in Lawrence and Overland Park, rather than at our Topeka office. Topeka and Shawnee County residents typically meet with our prescriber over secure video, which is available anywhere in Kansas. If you’d rather sit face to face, you can schedule in person at our Lawrence office, about 30 minutes east on I-70, or in Overland Park.
For many people, telehealth medication management is simply easier. Follow-ups can be as short as 15 or 30 minutes, so they fit into a lunch break at a state office, a gap between classes at Washburn, or the quiet after the kids are in bed. If you already see a therapist at our Topeka office, including our perinatal, LGBTQIA+ or autism specialists, your therapist and prescriber can coordinate directly within the same practice, with your consent.
- Secure video visits from home or a private space at work
- No commute from Auburn, Rossville, Berryton or rural Shawnee County
- In-person options in Lawrence and Overland Park when you want them
- Coordination with your Topeka therapist inside one practice
A whole-person, collaborative approach to psychiatry
Medication can be a powerful tool, but in our view it’s rarely the whole answer. Our psychiatric care blends prescribing with attention to sleep, nutrition, movement, stress and relationships, and our prescriber works closely with therapists who use trauma-informed, identity-affirming and mindfulness-based approaches. When appropriate, clients can also explore our SomaVerse ketamine-assisted therapy program, which requires its own medical screening. We also collaborate with other practitioners in the community when a broader, more holistic plan would serve you.
We also support people who want to reduce or come off psychiatric medications. Tapering should always happen gradually and with medical guidance, never abruptly on your own. Your prescriber will help you weigh timing, monitor for withdrawal or returning symptoms, and make sure therapy and other supports are in place first. Medication reviews and second opinions are welcome, too. Some people find they need less medication once therapy and lifestyle supports are working, while others choose to stay on a medication that helps. Both are valid.

How much does medication management cost in Topeka?
With insurance, we file claims for you and you pay your copay, coinsurance or deductible at the visit. Self-pay rates are $330 for a 60-minute psychiatric intake, $190 for a 30-minute follow-up and $170 for a 15-minute follow-up, with a 40% prompt-pay discount when paid on the day of service. Lab testing, if ordered, may or may not be covered by insurance.
Is there an in-person prescriber at your Topeka office?
Our psychiatric nurse practitioner sees clients by telehealth anywhere in Kansas and in person at our Lawrence and Overland Park offices, not in Topeka. Many people find video visits convenient, and Lawrence is roughly 30 minutes away on I-70 if you prefer to meet face to face. Therapy is available in person at our Topeka office.
Which insurance plans work for psychiatry?
If your plan is in network with our psychiatric provider, we file for you, and intakes and follow-ups are often covered. The practice’s in-network plans include BCBS of Kansas and Kansas City, Aetna, Cigna, Humana Medicare, Medicare, United, UMR, Tricare, VA/Veterans plans, Ambetter and KanCare plans like Sunflower and Healthy Blue. Please confirm your specific plan when you call.
Can I keep my current therapist somewhere else?
Yes. You’re welcome to receive medication management with us while continuing therapy elsewhere, and with your permission our prescriber can coordinate with your outside therapist or primary care provider. Some clients also choose to add therapy with one of our Topeka clinicians so their whole care team works within one practice.
How often will I need appointments?
Early on, follow-ups are usually spaced a few weeks apart while you start or adjust a medication. Once you’re stable, many people move to visits every one to three months. Your prescriber will recommend a schedule based on your medication, symptoms and how you’re doing, and you can always reach out sooner if something changes.
